assignnment 1-2

Popular culture is the shared knowledge and practices of a specific goup at a specific time, according to the book Common Culture. Basically this means that what was popular before we were born may or may not have the same interest that it did before. People's taste change, and what they like one day may be out the next. It is important for one to keep up with how things change, especially in the work place, because changes happen in business to keep up with customers and laws. For instance, currently I am a photographer at a portrait studio, it is important for me to understand the trends so that I can take pictures that are current, not boring and old looking. In my future job of accounting, it will be important to know because the laws change constantly and being able to accurately report the information and understand it is important.

The artifact that I have chosen is computers. This is something almost everyone uses on a daily basis now. Many years ago there were people who did not know how to turn on a computer, but over the years people old and young are using computers to communicate through email, play games, read papers, search for people, as well as keep information in the work place. Over the years the computer has also became less compact and there are a variety to choose from; laptops, desktop, all in ones, and even now have the capability of a touch screen.

  1. Melissa,

The computer is a huge pop culture artifact and it didn't even cross my mind. It is amazing how some things become so standard that you don't even realize that it once was not the norm. Now most homes have a computer or at least have access to a computer. I would feel cut off from the world if I did not have one. It is definitely something that everyone feels they need to have.
