week 5 analysis
When televisions first came out, they were large in size with a very small screen. There was no color on television, until the movie “The Wizard of Oz”. People did not use the television like we do today. They used it to view information pertaining to items such as the news. But over the years things have changed. Televisions come in several different sizes, with the screen being larger than the base of television. All shows, movies, and video games are shown in color. The features of televisions today are outstanding; you can choose what size, what shape, whether to mount it on the wall, the kind of picture you want. Today there is High definition televisions, which provide a better picture when watching a show that is broadcasted in high definition. I remember as a child, that televisions were square and big screen televisions were very bulky. Now you can get televisions in wide screen, and most are now flatter and are able to be mounted on the wall.
There are several different types of televisions to choose from, LCD or plasma televisions are the most popular. Televisions also have the function to hook up to cable, satellite, video games, DVD players, and much more. Before, people did not even know what recorded movies were. Just a few years ago, all movies were on a vhs, which is very rare to find now. The television has changed over the years, and will continue to change to as technology and needs change. There is talk about a television coming out soon that allows you to watch movies at home in 3D. I think that this is going too far, 3D is something that is cool in a movie theater or at a theme park show, but it is a little much to bring that into your own home.

Assignment 1-3 article analysis
According to the article, the movie takes place at a time when people feared what a nuclear spill would do. The movie makes up a story about how four turtles and a rat in the sewer were exposed to this nuclear waste spill and became strong heroes that defended the villains of New York. This thought takes away from people’s beliefs that nuclear waste or power causes such illnesses as leukemia (Bisges). The article also discusses that because the turtles have been exposed to nuclear waste and it resulted in a positive effect, then countries who have nuclear weapons feel often like the turtles do; powerful.
The article gives descriptions on how the movie relates to teenagers today. It describes how in the movie, there is a group of teens who are thieves and cause havoc on society. This group is drawn in by showing the kids how much fun they can have at the “lair”. The evil side encourages teens to join the group through things that interest teens in the real world; video games, loud music, skateboarding, cigarettes, and girls. The leader of this group also has the teens believing that they are not liked by the “outside world”, which the author of this article compares this to how communist dictators would behave. This type of talk is also what Americans believe to be evil, which relates back to good versus evil in society. The article addresses how good \verses evil is perceived in the movie, the turtles being the good guys and considered to be heroes. Quoting the article, “radioactive waste in the heart of New York to its salvation from an evil force, not the deaths of thousands of citizens”, is a powerful statement comparing how society can relax about their fear as well as view it in a comical view (Bisges).
The article also discusses how the movie of the turtles changed the way people say things, such as toys. Before the turtles, all toys related to heroes were of military background; GI Joe, etc. But the article compares the release of the movie as being a time when people were able to look past the period of war and move on to more interesting characters as heroes. Another part of the article discusses how the language is used from the movie. The language the teenage turtles use is considered to be slang, using phrases such as dude and radical, which appeals to teenagers. According to the article, the movie was directed more to teenagers, but it mentions many different real life situations that people can relate the movie to.
The main idea of the article is to show people how a cartoon movie may have changed how entertainment addresses activities and fears that people may have in our society. It talks about people’s fears of radioactive substances and how other movies played into those fears and maybe created more fears by showing dramatic affects of what these substances could do to humans. According to the article, this is a comical approach that has animals being exposed to these substances and how they got big muscles and became highly intelligent. The article also discusses how since the end of the cold war period, people have been viewing movies, shows, and reading stories about how heroes are military like and before the creation of the turtles, nobody would have ever had any thoughts of how anything else could be considered a hero. The way that the movie has changed the entertainment is showing a good versus evil scenario, adding a little touch of culture to the background (mainly Japanese), and some comical approach of how some feel about police and how they handle crime.
The article seems to be organized; it talks about the first movie and then goes into information about the second movie. It gives a lot of detail about what happens in the movie and scenes that lead of to why the author feels that the actions in the movie relate to events that happen in real life. I think that for the most part the article was on target to sticking to the main idea. There are a few parts that I feel drifted of and maybe they were giving more of a report about the movie, but that helped make the article more readable and keep the reader into the article. The main idea is present as long as you read the title. I do not believe that if you just read the paper you would know they were talking about how the turtles changed entertainment, but more about how it relates to how teenagers behave. The article discusses several different things that would attract teenagers to behave this way; video games etc., which could allow some to take a different view on the article than what the author’s title says the point should be.
One key idea I think that I would take away from this article is that movies are created because of the fears, beliefs, and attractions people have in society. I never looked at the movie “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” as being a film based on good versus evil, heroes, or related it to how it changed the attitude of how Americans felt since the war. This article also reminds me of how nuclear power is important to some countries, and the fears of these substances are blamed in health concerns as well as a fear of devastation from other countries.

assignment 4-1
Over the years technology has grown and handheld devices that can do many things are becoming more popular. To me, the iPhone does many of the same things that that iPad does, but the iPad does not have the capability of texting and calling someone. The iPad is supposed to be compared to a net book, which is a smaller version of a laptop. The iPad only weighs about one and a half pounds and has a 9.7 inch touch screen (apple.com). The cool thing about the iPad is that you don’t have a keyboard, you just type on the screen if need be.
The iPad combines many different devices into one and is very appealing to those who like devices that do many things. The iPad has applications much like the iPod touch, iTunes, maps, iBooks, and allows you to get online, view and send emails. With this device, you would not need to carry any other device. No more fumbling in your purse (if you have one) to find your iPod to listen to music or your net book to email your friends or colleagues. The iPad has been developed to make lives easier and to have a lightweight device to carry around that does almost everything. Compared to my laptop, it probably is much easier to carry around and is a lot lighter. I hate carrying my laptop with me, it weighs a lot.
The only concern I would have with the iPad is its durability. If something happens to the screen, like you drop it; is it like the iPhone screen, which is not able to be repaired. While the iPad sounds very interesting and would meet many of my needs, I am not sure I would want to spend money on something that I could damage fairly easily; it looks so fragile.

assingnment 3-1
Changing the way news is received and obtained has been a growing change. While television has been able to adapt to the change by providing websites that allow people to get local, national, and worldwide information when they want it. Newspaper companies have been struggling. Before, when you had a newspaper delivered to your door, you had to pay a subscription fee. But with less and less people buying subscriptions, newspaper companies are struggling to stay afloat. This is not necessarily a bad thing when you think how much paper is wasted in the United States; we only recycle about 45% of the paper that is used. If we don’t use paper for news, than it would save a lot of waste that we generate each year. But transforming newspaper on the internet is not new, but many of these newspapers do not get any money from it, it is usually a free service or the amount a few do charge does not cover the cost of running the newspaper. People do not need newspapers anymore, they can surf the internet and find out whatever they want. I believe the real trick now is getting advertisers to pay for what subscribers are not anymore.
Some would argue that the Sunday paper is the best, because you get coupons. “The Columbus Dispatch” advertises about how much you can save in coupons that are in their Sunday paper. But if you go to the internet, there are thousands of coupons you can print off, again who needs a newspaper. Who knows, in a couple of years maybe there will not be any newspapers. Our kids will look at us and say, “What is a newspaper?”

Digital cameras were introduced slowly, but now have become so popular that everybody has one. Who needs to waste money on using the portrait studio or paying a photographer? The prices that professionals charge are way higher than printing them at home or even taking them to a photo kiosk at your favorite store. Before, when a person took pictures on their own they had no clue to have they would look. There is no more rolling the wheel to get to the next frame or waiting for the flash to load. Depending on what kind of camera you have you can take several pictures very quickly instead of missing an opportunity. With digital cameras you can see the image and decide if you need to retake it or not. Taking pictures from a film camera also meant that you had to wait to have it developed, and lets face it I think I still have a few rolls of film that I have not had developed yet; who knows what is on those.
The change to digital cameras may upset the photography business, but in the long run it gives more people the option to do what they want, and to have instant pictures. Photographers still have a better eye then amateurs do, but you may not need the photographer as much as before. I am not complaining because I do not take my kids to the portrait studio anymore either. Having a nice camera and being able to capture them outside, in a park setting is much more appealing than the cheesy backgrounds that portrait studios have. Digital cameras have made life more convenient, and have reduced the need for professional photographers. Sales are slowly declining and boredom is really settling in.

Icons
The three icons I have chosen are characters from Sesame Street or even the show itself, Michael Jackson, and Michelle Obama. Sesame Street is a show for children that have been around for generations. Not only is it an icon but the show teaches many important aspects in life to children. Michael Jackson is a very well known icon. Michael Jackson was a popular figure growing up. He set new standards in music and was different than any other artist. Michelle Obama is an icon to women all around. She is strong and demonstrates how to be a mother and a positive role model, all while still being able to be the first lady. Michelle Obama has done many things that other first ladies have not, such as start a vegetable garden at the White House.
I choose these three icons because I believe that they have all done things differently and have affected us in different part of our lives. Sesame Street was what we watched when we were little, we learned how to respect others, count, and many other things from the show. There were characters of all kind, including the grouch, which taught us to accept people for who they are and not judge them. I chose Michael Jackson because, again it was a part in our lives when we were growing up, he changed the way music was performed and set the stage for future artists to come. Michael had many fans as well as some who did not like him, although his music was very popular. I chose Michelle Obama because I think that she was criticized when she first was in office as first lady, but has overcome many obstacles and has fought for what she believes in. She also is trying to promote what is best for the country, and showing Americans how little changes in our lives can make a difference, such as planting a garden.
All of these icons mean something to me, whether it is a memory of my childhood or a lesson learned. Sesame Street has been around for many years and has been a show that I believe we can all allow are children to watch. There is a lot of violence and language in children shows, and I feel Sesame Street is one you do not have to worry about. Michael Jackson was never one of my favorite artists, but I did respect him as an artist and my kids love him. His music and energy was always uplifting. Michelle Obama gives me encouragement. Some days things seem like you are not going to be able to complete a task, but her strength helps me believe I can. I also think that she stands behind in what she believes and that teaches me to try and believe in and go after what I want.
